Gundappa known by the name D V G and published in , is one of the best known of the major literary works in Kannada. It is widely regarded as a masterpiece among the Kannada speaking population of southern India, and is referred to as the Bhagavad Gita in Kannada. The title of this work can be translated as "Song of Mankuthimma". Kagga is a collection of poems, each being four lines in length.

Some of these poems are written in old Kannada style halegannada. Kagga poems are profound as well as poetic. Mankutimmana Kagga is all about how a non-intellectual, goaded by profound intellectual thoughts of great masters around him, would find himself in the world around him today! The poems convey great meanings of life and philosophy. Swarajya ji, 'Manku Thimma" represents a person who is ignorant of the facts of life and Kagga is a chain or yarn.

There are poems in this great work on facts of life and philosophy, considered a magnum opus and it is inspired by the Bhagavadgita. DVG as he is well known was not even a matriculate but became a scholar in English, Sanskrit and Kannada and deserved to be a Gyanpeeth award, although he never got it. He ran a public institution called Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs which exists even today and disseminates information to the public on public affairs.

Many stalwarts including the late maharaja of Mysore were its patrons and it has been visited by many great leaders of the past. I had the good fortune of being near to him for at least a couple of years in the latter part of s and used to attend regularly his discourses on Bhagavadgita every sunday which he held for several years until his death.
