Did the light bulb trick across the fuse holder and it lights for about 1 second then fades out within 1. My belief is that the chip is being told to shut down from high voltage. Sure enough, upon further investigation is see that only that side has a trace going into 3 Zener Diodes 1NA connected in series. They are rated for 30v. I decided to test them in case one blew. This unit has obviously been worked on as it was missing screws etc. Had a blown shotkey on the secondary side as well as the main power fet was also blown.
Fixed those already. It has presets and someone may have screwed with them causing the voltage to be so high it is shutting down on start up. Now the problem. These suckers are rated at 30V and my supply maxes out at X So I set up a series circuit with the zener and a 1K Resistor to limit the current.
The diodes do drop. Even at 31 volts reverse bias they do not seem to junction although one of them does start to drop about. I figure this means they are good and not breaking down early. Sound right to everyone else? Can I put 2 power supplies in series if I need a voltage over 30? I'm only going to be using 10 to 30 ma for these tests most likely. Thank You. Even with a schematic, switching power supplies can be tricky to troubleshoot, partly because of the feedback It's hard to know what's a cause and what's a symptom in a feedback-system.
