Kaminetzky has many years' experience in forensic engineering, being, in fact, one of the pioneers in its development; his book reflects these many years spent in evaluating failure causes.
Chapters dealing with failures to concrete, steel, and masonry structures follow an introductory discussion of failures, their ingredients, and their causes.
The importance of the topics of foundation failures and corrosion are singled out. Included in the various chapters are all the highly publicized failures like Bailey's Crossroads, L'Ambiance Plaza, and Hyatt Regency, along with scores of less well known cases of distress and failure. For the profession to learn the lessons from these failures requires that data be made generally available; this book represents the first really significant step in this process.
Excellent engineering sketches and photographs offer considerable help in visualizing the root cause of failure. Kaminetzky presents a brief historical description of each failure followed by his explanation of the cause.
A thorough understanding of the causes of the problem leads to an easy-to-follow diagnostic approach to prevention. This is the first really comprehensive book on this subject; several other books have dealt with some limited studies of types of failure investigations, such as Steven S.
LePatner and S. Johnson's Structural and Foundation Failures Kaminetzky is much more comprehensive, with excellent detail.
