Mario Benedetti always does the trick and this one does too. I took a cue from a friend on GR to read a book slowly. This one is under pages and it unfolded nicely. Simple story. Claudio, a young adolescent meets a girl, Rita. One day she climbs in the window to comfort him as his mother is dying.
She kisses him and then is gone. Claudio grows up learning something about women until he meets Mariana Sitting in the sun and need something to savour the moment? Claudio grows up learning something about women until he meets Mariana.
Their relationship blossoms but marriage is not on the radar which is odd for the time period, the mid s. Then an offer of a job in Quito far from his native Uruguay. The ending is classic Benedetti. His pace, that slow telling of the boy growing up, learning about sex, love, life and death just makes one savour in the words, the jokes, the passion, the pain.
It's all here. A perfect ending to an enjoyable day. View all 8 comments. I have loved all the Benedetti I've read, but I didn't find the narrator of this novel very compelling. For some reason, I began the book which someone lent me and asked me to read thinking it was a volume of short stories, and when I read the first chapter I felt relieved that I would not be rid of the narrator.
Then I realized I wouldn't be rid of him until the end of the novel, for that's what it was. I could have given the poor character more of an opportunity, but the fact is that since r I have loved all the Benedetti I've read, but I didn't find the narrator of this novel very compelling. I could have given the poor character more of an opportunity, but the fact is that since reading in Spanish still requires something of an extra effort for me, and since there are piles of super-important Spanish-language authors I haven't yet read, I felt compelled to move on to something newer to me and of greater literary significance.
I read this book a while ago it has no chronological order which is lame somehow. My first by Benedetti. Friendly and easy-going, but with deep surprises if you read between lines. It's very intersting book ,, have some nostaligia ,, taking you with the fellings of the book charcter. It was an easy read, took me 4 hours to finish it, a light language. This is my first first-person narration novel few chapters were in third person to read.
Reading first few pages I thought it was the author's introduction then I found it was actually the novel. The story was about nothing really. Just a guy telling us about his childhood and growing up no wonder I though first chapter was the author talking about his childhood. Unlike Seinfeld the tv show which is about nothing , this one It was an easy read, took me 4 hours to finish it, a light language.
Unlike Seinfeld the tv show which is about nothing , this one sucked big time. It was a flat story from end to end. He could've stopped anywhere in the middle and you wouldn't get shocked. I did enjoy the beginning however, the not-so-familiar-for-me firsr-person narration delivers huge amount of protaginst's emotions and train of thought.
But after 50 pages I got bored. I can say this book is so easy to read, I read it so fast, and the way Benedetti narrates the story is so thrilling, you can't stop reading, I've realized Benedetti likes to include femenine figures specially legs , always debates about God, and talks about love, but anyways, this book is so beautiful, I'm sure it won't let you down.
Self-biography of a man named Claudio, from his childhood in Capurro neighborhood in Montevideo, to his starts in an advertising agency and growth as a plastic artist. Death, love, mistery, luck, lots of tangos and bits of world history will accompany him through his journey in life, in a mid XX century Uruguay.
This is pretty much a good book, it was pretty awesome, I loved the stories told about how Claudio lived in Uruguay with his parents and relatives and everything was like an everyday story, it was great. I love Spanish surrealism. This book has just a touch of it, and it takes place during world war 2 in Uruguay. Jul 30, Ce rated it it was amazing. Couldn't finish! Maybe wrong timing This book took me back to my childhood.
Mario Benedetti is a genius with language, a language I grew up with. It connects me to my long forgotten feelings and memories of childhood. Quite intresting and good ending, easy going. It was amazing, loved every part of it! I expected a little bit more at the end of the book. To descriptive in my opinion. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Readers also enjoyed.
