Results Ten RCTs fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In addition, we included two meta-analysis. We focused on four effect variables comparing opioids to placebo. The use of opioid analgesics significantly reduces the mean VAS-score, while there were no significant changes for the three remaining variables. Conclusion Despite some minor methodological weaknesses in some of the studies, our review of the literature indicates that administration of opioid analgesics, prior to surgical assessment, effectively relieves pain, without increasing the risk of masking symptoms, diagnostic and treatment errors.
