Source: Ciberrevista Enfermeriadeurgencias. Depending on the condition of the membranes, we can identify three types: 1 Overt cord prolapse in which the cord lies below the presenting part and it pass into or out of the vagina. It is associated with rupture of membranes, 2 Cord presentation where the cord lies bellow the presenting part with or without membrane rupture and 3 Occult prolapse where the cord lies alongside the presenting part and the membranes remain intact.
Umbilical cord prolapse is considered to be an obstetric emergency because it compromises the fetal survival and the prognosis depends on the degree of compression and the diagnosis. The overall incidence of this prolapse cord is between 0,1 to 0,6 of all the deliveries. With this article, we want to make known the importance of an early diagnosis and a protocol of action carried out by health professionals, specially the midwife, before the managing of a cord prolapse.
