Their mind is firmly established in the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. They correctly develop the seven awakening factors. And they wake up to the supreme perfect awakening. Then they went to the guest house, where they spread carpets all over, prepared seats, set up a water jar, and placed a lamp.
Then they went back to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and told him of their preparations, saying: 1. Having washed his feet he entered the guest house and sat against the central column facing east.

Then they had the Buddha informed of the time, saying, 1. Craving for continued existence has been cut off; the attachment to continued existence is ended; now there are no more future lives. Where has he been reborn in his next life? Where have they been reborn in the next life? A noble disciple who has this may declare of themselves: 2. I am a stream-enterer!

Not until they can legitimately and completely refute the doctrines of others that come up, and teach with a demonstrable basis. The final extinguishment of the Realized One will be soon. That was a really big earthquake! At a time when a great wind blows, it stirs the water, and the water stirs the earth. They make the earth shake and rock and tremble. Then the earth shakes and rocks and trembles. An assembly of the gods of the Four Great Kings. An assembly of the gods of the Thirty-Three.
Is it a god or a human? Was it a god or a human? Now is not the time to beg the Realized One. There I said to you: 3. He has definitively stated: 3. I am thirsty and will drink. The shallow water has been churned up by their wheels, and it flows cloudy and murky.
Taking his bowl he went to the river. The Realized One has such psychic power and might! Drink the water, Holy One! Those who have gone forth remain in such peaceful meditations. Too soon the seer will vanish from the world! How could it possibly be otherwise? Meditate diligent, keen, and resolute for your own goal! Then they place it in an iron case filled with oil and close it up with another case. Then, having built a funeral pyre out of all kinds of fragrant substances, they cremate the corpse.

Only here is there a true ascetic, here a second ascetic, here a third ascetic, and here a fourth ascetic. Other sects are empty of ascetics. When four years have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, let them give me the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.
He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.
The text describes the events leading up to the Buddha's death and his travels during the last few months of his life. He also states that if he had been requested to do so it was within his power to prolong his life until the end of the aeon. Because of its attention to detail, it has been resorted to as the principal source of reference in most standard accounts of the Buddha's death. The sutta begins a few days before the rainy retreat when Vassakara, the minister, visited the Buddha in Rajgir on the initiative of Ajatashatru , a king of the Haryanka dynasty of Magadha. The narrative continues beyond the three months of the rainy retreat and records the passing away of the Buddha, his cremation and the division of relics finally ending with the erection of eight cetiyas or monuments enshrining the relics of the Buddha. Among them, the Pali version is of an early date in respect of language and contents. Other versions of the text exist in Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese.
