Long Discourses I shall destroy them, and lay ruin and devastation upon them! Ask him if he is healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably. He had the finest carriages harnessed. He asks if you are healthy and well, nimble, strong, and living comfortably. I have many duties, and much to do. He did what the Buddha asked. Then he went back, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, 1. Please, sir, go at your convenience.

Have you comprehended their minds to know that 1. Have you comprehended my mind to know that 1. He keeps strangers out and lets known people in. Their mind is firmly established in the four kinds of mindfulness meditation. They correctly develop the seven awakening factors. And they wake up to the supreme perfect awakening. Then they went to the guest house, where they spread carpets all over, prepared seats, set up a water jar, and placed a lamp.

Then they went back to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and told him of their preparations, saying: 1. Having washed his feet he entered the guest house and sat against the central column facing east.

Then he dismissed them, 1. Please go at your convenience. They got up from their seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on their right, before leaving.

Then they had the Buddha informed of the time, saying, 1. Craving for continued existence has been cut off; the attachment to continued existence is ended; now there are no more future lives. Where has he been reborn in his next life? Where have they been reborn in the next life? A noble disciple who has this may declare of themselves: 2. I am a stream-enterer!

It consists of the four pairs, the eight individuals. She bowed and sat down to one side. And some were similarly colored in yellow, red, or white. They bowed to the Buddha, sat down to one side, 2. Then she had the Buddha informed of the time, saying, 2. The meal is ready. They did as the Buddha said, 2. Let the teaching be your island and your refuge, with no other refuge. Taking his sitting cloth he followed behind the Buddha.

May the Holy One please remain for the eon! That would be for the welfare and happiness of the people, for the benefit, welfare, and happiness of gods and humans. He rose from his seat, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before sitting at the root of a tree close by. May the Holy One now become fully extinguished! Now is the time for the Buddha to become fully extinguished. Not until they practice properly, living in line with the teaching.

Not until they can legitimately and completely refute the doctrines of others that come up, and teach with a demonstrable basis. The final extinguishment of the Realized One will be soon. That was a really big earthquake! At a time when a great wind blows, it stirs the water, and the water stirs the earth. They make the earth shake and rock and tremble. Then the earth shakes and rocks and trembles. An assembly of the gods of the Four Great Kings. An assembly of the gods of the Thirty-Three.

Is it a god or a human? Was it a god or a human? Now is not the time to beg the Realized One. There I said to you: 3. He has definitively stated: 3. He did what the Buddha asked, went up to him, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, 3. Having carefully memorized them, you should cultivate, develop, and make much of them so that this spiritual practice may last for a long time.

Persist with diligence. This is the first great reference. This is the second great reference. This is the third great reference. This is the fourth great reference. You should remember them. Then he had the Buddha informed of the time, saying, 4. He did as he was asked, then came back to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. I am tired and will sit down. I am thirsty and will drink. The shallow water has been churned up by their wheels, and it flows cloudy and murky.

Taking his bowl he went to the river. The Realized One has such psychic power and might! Drink the water, Holy One! Those who have gone forth remain in such peaceful meditations. Those who have gone forth remain in such peaceful meditations, 4. And not far from the threshing-hut two farmers who were brothers were killed, as well as four oxen.

I said to them, 4. And two farmers who were brothers were killed, as well as four oxen. He plunged into the river and bathed and drank. And when he had emerged, he went to the mango grove, 4. I am tired and will lie down. With hair disheveled and arms raised, they fall down like their feet were chopped off, rolling back and forth, lamenting: 5. Too soon the Holy One will become fully extinguished!

Too soon the seer will vanish from the world! How could it possibly be otherwise? Meditate diligent, keen, and resolute for your own goal! Then they place it in an iron case filled with oil and close it up with another case. Then, having built a funeral pyre out of all kinds of fragrant substances, they cremate the corpse.

He went to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:. Do not grieve, do not lament. Did I not prepare for this when I explained that 5. Devote yourself to meditation, and you will soon be free of defilements. His dominion extended to all four sides, he achieved stability in the country, and he possessed the seven treasures.

And some, with hair disheveled and arms raised, falling down like their feet were chopped off, rolling back and forth, lamented, 5. He is tired. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:.

Only here is there a true ascetic, here a second ascetic, here a third ascetic, and here a fourth ascetic. Other sects are empty of ascetics. When four years have passed, if the mendicants are satisfied, let them give me the going forth, the ordination into monkhood.

He lived having achieved with his own insight the goal for which gentlemen rightly go forth from the lay life to homelessness.

Mahāparinibbāṇa Sutta

Because of its attention to detail, it has been resorted to as the principal source of reference in most standard accounts of the Buddha's death. The sutta begins a few days before the rainy retreat when Vassakara, the minister, visited the Buddha in Rajgir on the initiative of Ajatashatru , a king of the Haryanka dynasty of Magadha. The narrative continues beyond the three months of the rainy retreat and records the passing away of the Buddha, his cremation and the division of relics finally ending with the erection of eight cetiyas or monuments enshrining the relics of the Buddha. Among them, the Pali version is of an early date in respect of language and contents. Other versions of the text exist in Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese.
