Launched in September, the HP BladeSystem c , codenamed Shorty, is a blade server solution designed for small and medium-sized businesses, or for larger organisations deploying a few servers to a branch office or remote location. About the only difference between the c and HP's high-end BladeSystem c is that the c has a smaller chassis that holds fewer blades and so costs less. The c takes a maximum of 16 blades, while the c is limited to eight; however, the blades that go inside both enclosures are exactly the same. Our review system was fitted with three ProLiant Server Blades, each with a different type of processor. Each had a front-panel socket and lead for connecting a VGA monitor and two USB devices — normally a keyboard and mouse. Our blades also came with two hot-pluggable 72GB 10,rpm 2.

Codenamed Shorty', the c takes everything that makes HP's mighty c great and squeezes it all into a compact 6U high chassis. Both rack mount and floor standing models are offered and in this exclusive review we take a close look at the latter. Fortunately for us the floor standing c has wheels on the chassis and the pallet it was delivered in contained a handy ramp. Be under no illusions the c is built like a tank and doesn't weigh much less than one either. You can fit four full-height or eight half-height blades into the c's enclosure and choose from all those available for the c The c runs on single-phase power and the chassis starts with four 1,W hot-plug power supplies which can be increased to six. It uses the same cooling modules as the c chassis, which are based on jet engine design principals.
